Let’s face it. Not every team building activity gets people excited. The best experiences give colleagues a chance to do something different, discover new skills and enjoy working together outside their usual roles. At Charity Bike Factory, we get people talking, thinking creatively, solving problems and having fun, all while working towards a shared goal.

Our experienced facilitators bring plenty of personality to the day, with activities designed to encourage communication, collaboration, creativity and a little healthy competition. Depending on your event, these can include:

• All Ability Challenge: Navigate a course on an adapted cycle while blindfolded, putting communication and trust to the test.
• Re-use & Recycle: Get creative with recycled bicycle tyres, transforming everyday materials into something entirely new.
• Team Tyre Challenge: Discover which team can master a puncture repair against the clock.
• Slow Race: Find out who can go the slowest while keeping their balance. Easier said than done.

Then it’s time to roll up your sleeves and build the bikes. Working in small teams, colleagues take on different roles, share ideas and support each other as the bikes take shape, guided by our experienced Bikeworks mechanics. No previous bike-building experience is needed, and there’s something particularly satisfying about standing back at the end and seeing what you’ve achieved together.

From Small Teams to Large Corporate Events – We’ve Got the Experience

 

Whether you’re bringing together colleagues from different departments, welcoming a new group of interns or organising a company-wide volunteering day, Bikeworks has experience delivering events that get everyone involved.

Back in 2024, we partnered with eight corporate clients across 13 events, engaging around 1,100 participants who collectively built 206 BMX bikes. One of those experiences saw 130 Deutsche Bank interns come together at Lee Valley VeloPark, building 18 BMX bikes as part of their corporate volunteering day.

But delivering a successful event isn’t simply about numbers. It’s about creating an enjoyable experience where every participant has an opportunity to contribute, work alongside colleagues and feel proud of what they’ve achieved together.

And it’s this combination of teamwork, enjoyment and professional delivery that our corporate clients value. As the team at Google shared following their event at the London Velodrome:

What makes Bikeworks Charity Bike Factory different is what happens after the event. The bikes aren’t dismantled when the day finishes. Instead, they’re gifted through our partnerships with charities and community organisations, helping children, young people, families and adults access the freedom, independence and enjoyment that cycling brings.

Take four-year-old Yusuf, who received his first-ever bike through our partnership with Mile End Community Project, following a Charity Bike Factory event with PIMCO.

His parent shared:

“This is his first ever bike, I can’t believe it is brand new, he loves his bike, he rides it every day and I can see how confident he has become since riding the bike.”

For Yusuf, having his own bike means being able to ride whenever he wants, practise his skills and enjoy the confidence that comes with learning something new. His parent’s words also reveal something important: without the bike being gifted, owning a brand-new cycle would have been financially out of reach for the family.

For the PIMCO colleagues who built the bike, their team building experience helped create that opportunity. What started as a few hours working together became something Yusuf could enjoy every day.

And Yusuf is just one example. Through partnerships with organisations including NOVA, Moving Moi CIC, Thames Reach and Children with Voices, bikes built during our corporate events are reaching people across London, supporting everything from children’s first cycling experiences to greater independence and opportunities for families to cycle together.

Charity Bike Factory

 

Our flagship Charity Bike Factory experience brings colleagues together to tackle practical challenges and work towards a shared goal: building a bike that will be gifted to someone who can benefit from it.

Designed for groups of 8 to 400 participants, colleagues work in teams of three to seven, supported by experienced Bikeworks facilitators and mechanics. Depending on the event, participants can build children’s bikes, BMX bikes, adult cycles or specialist cycles, with bike-building experiences typically lasting between two and two-and-a-half hours.

As Bikeworks celebrates its 20th anniversary, we are proud to become an official Action Hub partner with Fatima’s UK Campaign.

The partnership is grounded in a shared belief in the ability and potential of children and young people in and leaving care, and the importance of creating strong relationships, positive experiences and opportunities that can grow over time.

For Bikeworks, it marks the next stage of a relationship that began two years ago, following a chance meeting with Fatima and a ride together on one of our side-by-side cycles.

From a chance meeting to the Action Hub

Following those first conversations, children and young people from Banya Fostering joined Bikeworks and Fatima’s UK Campaign at the Olympic BMX track at Lee Valley VeloPark.

In the summer of the Paris Olympics, the group enjoyed a coached BMX session and received BMX bikes built through Bikeworks’ Charity Bike Factory, which brings corporate teams together to build cycles for community partners. It was a memorable day for everyone and demonstrated something we all know: opportunities matter.

The following year, Fatima and Gina invited Bikeworks to attend the One Voice Summit at Guildhall. It was a powerful gathering of care-experienced people, organisations, professionals and policymakers, united by a shared commitment to improving the experiences of children and young people in care and bringing about lasting change.

We are incredibly proud that Bikeworks is joining FATIMA’S UK CAMPAIGN as an Action Hub partner.

Our relationship has already shown what meaningful collaboration can achieve. Bikeworks has supported our children and young people with 60 bikes and created opportunities at the velodrome to learn new skills, build confidence and experience the freedom, independence and sense of achievement that cycling can bring.

For young people with care experience, these opportunities are about so much more than a bike or a course. They are about belonging, being given a chance and having people and organisations around them who genuinely believe in their potential.

That is exactly what our Action Hubs are about: bringing good people and organisations together and turning goodwill into practical opportunities that can make a lasting difference.

Becoming an Action Hub partner is the next stage of that relationship. Bikeworks is now developing how our experience of inclusive cycling and cycle mechanics can contribute to the campaign, both through practical activity and by adding our voice to the wider conversations about what needs to change.

Why this matters

Strong relationships and opportunities that continue over time matter for every child and young person. Yet access to them is not equal.

More than 80,000 children were in care in England in 2025. The latest figures also show that 40% of care leavers aged 19 to 21 were not in education, employment or training.

These figures reinforce the importance of creating opportunities that children and young people can return to, relationships that have time to develop, and space to build on their interests and strengths.

This is what Fatima and Gina are building through the Action Hub network: bringing together people and organisations with a shared purpose and turning national attention into meaningful action within communities. The voices and experiences of children and young people in and leaving care will shape what that action becomes.

Twenty years of using cycles as a tool for good

Bikeworks was founded in 2006, inspired by the promise that the London 2012 Games would create lasting opportunities in East London.

Twenty years later, from our home at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, it feels particularly fitting to be building this partnership with Fatima Whitbread MBE. A world champion and two-time Olympic medallist, Fatima’s own story began in care in East London. Her life and sporting career embody extraordinary resilience.

Resilience has also shaped Bikeworks’ journey. Over the past 20 years, we have continued to develop and adapt while remaining committed to using cycles as a tool for good, widening access to physical activity, wellbeing and connectivity through cycling.

That experience has shown us the different but connected possibilities cycling and cycle mechanics can create. Learning to cycle or finding a cycle that works for you matters in its own right, opening up an enjoyable way to be active, spend time with others and take part regularly.

Cycle mechanics offers something different: practical learning that can lead to recognised qualifications, experience of the workplace and, for those interested, progression towards employment in the cycle industry.

Through the Action Hub partnership, we want to explore how cycling and cycle mechanics can build on the interests and strengths of children and young people in and leaving care, with their voices shaping what comes next.

What Bikeworks brings to the Action Hub

Bikeworks brings together the people, place and experience needed to turn a shared ambition into something practical. Our instructors, mechanics and tutors work across inclusive cycling, cycle mechanics and accredited learning, supported by specialist cycles and established training facilities at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Together, these create the potential for more than a one-off experience. Children and young people could return, develop their interests over time and connect cycling and wellbeing with practical learning, qualifications and future opportunities.

Why practical skills, wellbeing and supported routes into work matter

The report names the problem. The next question is what works.

Alan Milburn’s Young People and Work interim report sets out the scale of the challenge facing young people who are not in education, employment or training, and identifies the issues that now need serious attention.

Nearly one million young people in the UK are NEET. The report also challenges the idea that this is about young people lacking aspiration. In the survey carried out for the review, 84% of NEET young people said they wanted to find a job, education or training.

The issue is more complex, and more serious. More than six in ten NEET young people have never had a job. Health, disability and mental health are now central to the picture, with 44% of NEET young people reporting a work-limiting health condition in 2025. The report also names warning signs that too often go unaddressed, including SEND, persistent absence, low attainment, challenges at home, poor mental health and weak exposure to work.

The issue is not whether young people want to work. It is whether they can access the right support, practical experience and paid opportunities to move into work and progress.

This has been part of my work for more than 20 years

Before Bikeworks, my work at Tower Project included setting up an employment service for people facing significant barriers to work. That experience shaped the thinking that followed. It showed that employment support alone was not enough.

The Neighbourhood Renewal Fund was part of that story. In Tower Hamlets, it funded the setting up of the Job Enterprise and Training service for Disabled people, based on a clear case made to the local authority about need, exclusion and the importance of specialist employment support. That mattered because the funding reached the right place: a local response shaped around people being excluded from work.

What was still missing were enough supported workplace environments where people could build practical skills, experience paid work, develop routine and confidence, and move towards longer-term employment.

My research confirmed what the employment service had already shown in practice: people needed access to paid work in a supported workplace, with training, supervision and progression built in. That thinking shaped Bikeworks.

Bikeworks was created as a practical solution

Tackling unemployment and exclusion was part of the original concept for setting up Bikeworks. From the experience at Tower Project, it was clear that advice, encouragement and job-search support had a place, but they did not create enough routes into paid work.

What was missing were supported workplace environments where practical skills, routine, confidence and paid employment could be built together.

Bikeworks was built as an entrepreneurial solution to that institutional problem: creating a bridge between long-term unemployment and sustained work, using cycling as the route into skills, employment and opportunity.

That mattered in East London. When Bikeworks was created in 2006, the Olympic and Paralympic Games were bringing growth, investment and change. The question for us was whether local people already excluded from employment would be able to access the jobs, skills and economic opportunities being created around them.

Even during periods of relatively high employment, people can still be locked out of opportunity because standard routes into work often assume networks, confidence, health, stability, qualifications and support that are not equally available.

We know what works when investment reaches the right place

By 2011, Bikeworks had developed a model that could be grown. Barclays’ involvement in Cycle into Work showed what became possible when investment backed the whole route, not just the training.

The programme connected cycle mechanics with workplace skills, employer links and progression into the cycling industry. It gave people access to practical learning, a real sector and a supported route towards paid work.

Years later, during Covid, Kickstart showed the same principle again. It was created in response to the risk of rising youth unemployment and funded paid six-month work placements for young people.

At Bikeworks, those placements worked because they were not treated as work experience on the margins. Young people came into real roles, with support around them, and we retained and employed those who came through our doors. Many other organisations saw similar success.

That is the point. When investment pays for the conditions that make progression possible — practical work, supervision, support, employer links and time — young people can move into paid work and build from there.

Cycle mechanics is one route into skills, confidence and work

Cycle mechanics matters in this argument because it shows what practical skills can do when they are part of a supported route into work. It is not only about learning a trade. It is about creating the conditions for young people to build confidence, develop workplace behaviours, understand a real sector and move towards paid employment.

For some young people, cycle mechanics can lead directly into work: workshop roles, e-bike maintenance, adapted cycle servicing, Dr Bike, fleet maintenance, cycle hire, community cycling and active travel. These are real jobs connected to healthier, more sustainable places.

For others, the value is in the transferable skills built through the process: following instructions, solving problems, communicating clearly, working with others, developing patience, completing tasks and seeing progress. These are skills needed in any workplace.

This is also where wellbeing and employment connect. Confidence is not built by telling a young person to be more confident. It is built through experience, responsibility, support and the chance to succeed at something real.

That is why practical skills should be part of the response to youth unemployment and economic inactivity. They can create a different starting point: one based on capability, trust and progression.

The problem is not knowing what to do. It is how this work is funded.

Over the past 20 years, funding has changed significantly. Programmes such as the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund, New Deal for Communities and the Working Neighbourhoods Fund were not perfect, but they allowed local need to be understood and acted on. They gave councils, local partnerships and community-rooted organisations the ability to build practical responses to unemployment and exclusion.

That mattered because this work takes time. Supporting people into employment is not always a straight line. It requires trust, practical skills, supervision, confidence-building, employer links and progression routes that can respond to people’s lives as they are.

At the point when Bikeworks wanted to grow its supported employment model, funding was already moving in a different direction. Larger contracts, apprenticeships, levy arrangements, further education routes and payment-by-results models became harder for smaller providers to access or carry.

Payment-by-results caused real damage to smaller organisations working with people with complex lives and higher support needs. It expected providers to carry the cost of delivery upfront, absorb the financial risk if outcomes took longer, and still achieve results with very limited resource.

That model favoured scale, cashflow and lower-risk participants. It rewarded quicker outcomes and made it harder to support people whose route into work needed more time, more trust and more specialist support.

The consequence was that people furthest from employment were pushed further to the side, while organisations with the skills, relationships and experience to support them found it harder to access the funding needed to do the work properly.

The training centres are still here

Bikeworks still has two cycle mechanics training centres. These spaces are not just about tools, workstands and technical training. They create the conditions for confidence to build: routine, trusted relationships, a sense of belonging, practical skills and progression.

We have the tutors, knowledge and experience to connect young people into cycle mechanics, e-bike maintenance, adapted cycle servicing and fleet maintenance.

These spaces used to be full each week with funded programmes for young people. Today, without the same funding routes, they are more often used for paid public training.

Bikeworks has not lost the ability to deliver. What has weakened is the availability of funding that allowed young people to access this kind of training, support and relationship-based learning.

As Bikeworks came through Covid, we tried to reopen those routes. We explored the Flexible Support Fund, rewrote applications, responded to requirements and put significant resource into trying to rebuild the model we knew could work. But even with the evidence behind us, it did not translate into a viable funding opportunity.

For an organisation like ours, that meant scarce resource was pulled into navigating funding systems rather than opening the doors of our training centres to young people who would have benefited.

The next response needs to be shaped with those who know how this work happens

The Milburn report should make us stop and think. If young people are becoming detached from employment, education, health and work experience, the answer cannot sit in one part of the system.

It also cannot be designed only around national targets, large contracts or simplified assumptions about young people’s readiness for work.

The next response needs to invest in trusted, local routes that connect wellbeing, skills and employment. It needs to fund the time it takes to build trust, not just the qualification. It needs to value community-rooted providers, not only large contracts. It needs to recognise that practical skills development can also be wellbeing work.

Bikeworks was created in that space. Twenty years on, the need has not gone away. If anything, the report shows that the need for practical, supported routes into work has become more urgent.

As the next stage of policy, funding and investment is shaped, those designing it need to draw on the experience of organisations that have built supported routes into work before. That means speaking to organisations that know how to support young people to move from exclusion into confidence, skills, paid work and progression.

We have just celebrated our birthday. From our beginnings as “Olympic Bikes” –  a grassroots idea born in the run-up to the 2012 Games – through to today, we’ve held one vision: to make cycling accessible to everyone. What started as a response to inequality in East London has grown into a social enterprise with impact across the capital, and beyond.

As we approach our 20th anniversary in 2026, we’re taking a moment to reflect. The journey has been full of collaboration, persistence, and belief in the power of cycles as a tool for good. One of the clearest examples of that vision in action is our Inclusive Cycling Hub, based at the heart of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

A Capital Investment That Built a Legacy

The Inclusive Cycling Hub stands as a testament to what’s possible when vision meets support. The London Marathon Foundation played a pivotal role in turning our idea into a physical, living hub.

Their investment wasn’t just about creating a building. It was about removing barriers to activity and inspiring participation for people of all ages and abilities, especially those who are too often excluded from cycling. The Hub provides access to specialist cycles, expert support, and a welcoming space –  disabled people, older adults, their families and carers experience the freedom and wellbeing that cycling brings.

Through their capital investment in the Hub, the Foundation created a lasting legacy in East London: a space that continues to be activated through programmes, inclusive cycle sales, and outreach. Built to endure beyond the initial investment, the Hub reflects the Foundation’s mission to improve lives through physical activity, inclusion, and accessible spaces.

• Open House Festival 2023 – Design Partner (winner) – one of just five projects chosen that year for architectural merit and public/social value.
• Architects’ Journal Retrofit & Reuse Awards (shortlist) – under £500k category.

 

 

We partnered with Constructive & Co, East-London makers with experience delivering joinery across the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, including for Plexal at Here East. They produced robust, high-quality fitted elements for the Hub, built to support frequent movement of specialist cycles and the demands of an active adaptive-cycling environment. The finish reflects the ambition for a durable, quality and welcoming space that can stand up to daily programme delivery.

The result is a fit-out designed for heavy daily use and specialist equipment, without compromising quality.

 

Cycling in Action: The All Ability Club

Right outside the Velodrome, the Hub comes alive every week through our All Ability Club. Here, people who are disabled or have limited mobility, along with their friends, families and carers, can try from our fleet of specialist cycles in a safe, welcoming space.

It’s about more than learning to ride. It’s about joy, confidence, and connection. Week by week, we see people discover cycling for the first time, or return to it after many years, often saying they never thought it would be possible.

Participation has almost tripled in three years, demonstrating both rising demand and the impact of consistent, relationship-based delivery.

All Ability participation (Apr 2022 – Mar 2025):

The growth is driven by people returning, bringing others, and becoming part of the community.
