Beginners Maintenance Training – WCGL

Beginners Maintenance Training – WCGL

Our beginners course is a great introduction to bicycle maintenance and is suitable for people who have never touched an allen key in their life, or people who have muddled through a puncture repair but would like to be slicker.

After the course you will be able to check your bike over before a ride to make sure it is road worthy, or repair a puncture much more confidently. You will also pick up some tips for keeping your bike in good shape, hopefully making your servicing intervals less frequent.

The Beginners Course Covers:

    • Roadside puncture repair – removal of wheel and tyre
    • M-Check (learning how to check that major components are safe and roadworthy, making minor adjustments)
    • Removal and refitting of brake blocks, balancing brake calipers
    • Adjusting brake cable tension
    • Preventative care e.g. how to clean and lubricate your bike parts

Tool kits

The training centre is fully equipped with everything you need on the day (and more!) but these tool kits are a great way to use the skills you learn on your own bike after the course:

Basic tool kit: Puncture repair kit, set of 3 super B tyre levers, wet/dry lubricant and a Neos simplicity L wench (non ratchet) with 10 bits.

Advanced tool kit: Puncture repair kit, set of 3 super B tyre levers, wet/dry lubricant and a SuperB 18 in 1 folding tool.

Please note

We may have to cancel sessions with fewer than 3 participants, and move participants’ bookings to a suitable future date.

This course is appropriate for the vast majority of standard bikes but please book on to a specialist course to learn maintenance of hydraulic bikes.

You can either bring your own bike to practice on (recommended) or we have a number of training bikes you can use.

Participants can switch course dates (subject to available spaces) or cancel their course a minimum 1 week before the course date. Cancellations/date changes after this point cannot be processed and participants will lose their course fee.

Free cycle training sessions across Hammersmith & Fulham

Whether you’re a complete beginner that would like to start cycling or a regular cyclist looking to brush up on advanced skills, our instructors will tailor a cycle training session to suit you.

Our fully trained instructors follow the nationally recognised Bikeability syllabus, starting with an off-road assessment of skills for all participants and then building from there. We can also offer support planning and riding a route to work or school, if that is your cycling aim.

The 1-2-1 sessions will last for 2 hours and can be booked at a mutually convenient time. Please allow for additional time for setting up the session. Unless otherwise discussed with our instructor, sessions begin at one of our several hubs and can lend bikes from one of these, outside of School hours.

We ask riders to confirm that they and people they live with have been symptom free for 14 days. Additionally when confirming the booking please let us know if you are in a vulnerable group.

Based on local Government’s latest advice and guidance of COVID-19 we ask all riders to be proactive in ensuring social distance of 2 meters and to have their own Personal Protective Equipment (including gloves and masks). It is important to take steps to ensure riders & instructors safety. If you do not have PPE, we can provide some at our Cycling Hub at St Augustines School. When confirming the booking with your instructor please let them know if you are in need of this.

Our instructors will meet you in the park and begin by assessing your cycling level. The sessions will be tailored to suit your cycling capabilities and needs.

Deposit

Bikeworks charges a fully refundable £5.00 deposit for each session, which will be returned in full on completion of the session. We have a 48 hour cancellation policy, after this time we will be unable to refund your deposit.

Once your £5.00 deposit has been paid, you will receive an email with a link allowing you to select a time and date for your session. Please note, the blue squares with a time, on the booking calendar, signifies the slot being available.

Can’t find a slot that suits you? Not to worry! Our Instructors are constantly opening up new slots so please keep a regular eye out on the booking page for a more suited time.

Eligibility

You must live, work or study in the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham. Anyone 16 years or under must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the session.

Please note we are able to offer you up to 2 hours of free cycle training (x 2 sessions per rider).

Complete Beginners

Due to social distance restrictions please consider having another household member with you as instructors will not be able to support beginners or stand close to them.

Please note if riders are unable to progress without support, the instructors may need to end the session and reschedule at a different time.
