Bikeworks exist to empower people to start fixing, maintaining and riding their bicycles with confidence!

Whether a complete beginner or an experienced cyclist, we have a course to suit your needs!

Bikeworks are currently offering one day beginner and intermediate bicycle maintenance training courses at our spacious modern workshop in Cambridge Heath Road, Bethnal Green.

The maintenance courses are delivered by fully qualified instructors and trainees will use professional tools and workstations.

Participants are asked to bring their own bicycles to work on.

You can tune-up your ride while learning effective maintenance techniques!

Beginners Bicycle Maintenance Course

The Beginners course covers the basics of bike maintenance from fixing a puncture to replacing your brake blocks. It is suitable for beginners to bike maintenance, as well as anyone wishing to brush up on their skills.

(The courses are free to those who work, study or reside in The London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham or The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea)

To ensure an engaging learning environment we may have to cancel sessions with less than 3 participants and move them to a suitable future course – The cut-off point for booking will be 1 week prior to sessions

The course covers the following:

  • Roadside puncture repair – removal of wheel and tyre
  • M-Check (learning how to check that major components are safe and roadworthy, making minor adjustments)
  • Removal and refitting of brake blocks, balancing brake callipers
  • Principles of basic gear adjustment
  • Checking chain tension
  • Preventative care e.g. how to clean and lubricate parts of the bike

Intermediate Bicycle Maintenance Course

The Intermediate course is designed for people looking to take their maintenance skills to the next level. It covers changing cables and truing your wheel as well as other hits tips and tricks

  • Removal and refitting of brake cables
  • Reconnecting and setting up new brakes
  • Removal and refitting of gear cables
  • Limit stop screw demonstration
  • Principles of adjusting front derailleur
  • Wheel truing – demonstration and practical application

WHEEL BUILDING COURSE

Demystifying one of the dark-arts of cycle maintenance, our 6-hour course will talk you through the process and principles of creating a rear wheel from parts.

We have hubs, spokes, rims, and nipples and a fully-equipped professional workshop for your session.

Using our parts, you will leave with the knowledge to build your own wheels in future.

Saturday 20th May


The course covers the following:

  • Calculating spoke length
  • Lacing spokes, rim and hub to form wheel
  • Tensioning, dishing and trueing of assembled wheel

The courses cost £60 per session (or £100 for the pair booked for same trainee).
Cancellations cannot be accepted within seven days to course commencement.
