Join the Bikeworks team

Bikeworks is a not-for-profit social enterprise using cycles as a tool for good.

Across London, our team is out in parks, schools, community spaces, workplaces and events, widening access to cycling through Bikeability, All Ability, specialist cycles, Dr Bike, cycle mechanics, e-mobility, cargo cycle training and team building.

This is practical, people-focused work. Our instructors, mechanics and facilitators teach riders, maintain cycles, guide groups, work with specialist equipment and create more ways for people to experience cycling.

We believe everyone should have access to cycling – for physical activity, wellbeing and connectivity – between people and place.

If you have experience in cycling, cycle instruction, cycle mechanics or group facilitation, and want your work to widen access to cycling, we would like to hear from you.

What we deliver

Cycle Connect uses side-by-side e-assist cycles to widen access to active travel for people who may not be able to cycle independently.

Bikeworks Cycle Pilots ride with passengers for local journeys, appointments, fresh air, conversation, community activities and time outside. We also take Cycle Connect to public events, giving people the chance to experience cycling as an accessible active travel option focused on access, equity and participation

Bikeworks delivers All Ability cycling through regular clubs, one-off sessions, schools, holiday programmes, community settings and events across London.

Our specialist cycle fleet includes adapted cycles and side-by-side cycles, enabling more people to cycle in a way that works for them.

All Ability delivery is led by qualified Bikeability Instructors. Instructors joining this area of work receive Bikeworks All Ability CPD, covering our specialist cycle fleet, inclusive delivery approach and the Bikeworks Way.

We deliver Bikeability and cycle skills training in primary and secondary schools, including Bikeability Levels 1, 2 and 3, SEND schools and tailored school-based delivery.

We deliver cycle training for individual riders, groups and families, using the National Standard for Cycle Training as the foundation, and Bikeability where the programme applies.

Sessions are shaped around the rider, the journey and the riding environment, from learning to ride and basic cycle control through to road riding, junctions, route planning and everyday journeys.

This includes training for adults, children and families, alongside community sessions commissioned by councils, housing associations, health partners and local organisations.

We deliver practical e-mobility training for individuals, workplaces and partner organisations. This includes e-cycle, e-cargo and e-scooter training, with a focus on handling skills, rules of use, journey planning and real journeys.

Our mechanics deliver Dr Bike sessions, maintenance checks, pop-up cycle clinics, beginner and intermediate maintenance courses, accredited mechanics training and bike building activity.

Our team building activity brings workplaces together through practical cycle-based experiences, including bike building. The cycles are then gifted through community partners, widening access to cycling for people who may not otherwise have access to a bike.

Find the role or training route below that fits your experience.

Cycle Pilots also represent Bikeworks at public events, where Cycle Connect gives people a practical experience of accessible cycling and shows how active travel can work for more people.

Cycle Pilots receive Bikeworks training, including the operation of our side-by-side e-assist cycles, passenger welcome, route planning, safeguarding, risk assessment and the Bikeworks Way.

BMX Racer, Coach and Bicycle Mechanic: Silvi Vargas in Conversation this International Women’s Day

This International Women’s Day we are shining a light on Silvi Vargas.

Silvi Vargas is a London-based BMX racer, coach and bicycle mechanic whose work is opening up BMX to more women and girls.

Originally from Colombia, she discovered the sport after watching Colombian rider Mariana Pajón win Olympic gold at the London 2012 Games, an experience that sparked her own journey into racing and coaching.

Today Silvi is a familiar presence in London’s BMX community, coaching at Merton Saints BMX Club and creating spaces where women and girls can build skills, confidence and a sense of belonging in a sport that has traditionally been male dominated.

Alongside competing, she works as a mechanic and mentor, sharing the practical knowledge and encouragement that allows new riders to step into the sport and stay.

Through her racing, coaching and community work, Silvi represents a new generation of leaders in cycling who are reshaping who the sport is for and who feels welcome on the track.

IWD 2026

Read on to hear from Silvi herself…

–  What do you feel you give to the cycling community through your work?

The biggest thing I give is representation. I love that there’s no week when I don’t get asked where the ‘mechanic man’ is, and then the surprise to see me, a woman, working as a mechanic. I coach and teach a lot of different types of sessions, classes and cycling disciplines, but my focus has always been to get more women, girls and non-binary people involved in cycling (especially BMX and MTB) in what is otherwise a male-dominated space. I am also very passionate about making cycling accessible and inclusive to marginalised communities that experience financial barriers.

–  What has cycling given back to you?

I am so grateful that everything I do is cycling-related! My job, my sport and my tool for good mental health. I couldn’t see myself doing anything else. I love interacting with other people and being a ‘bridge’ in their journey as they find their own relationship with cycling and themselves. It is a beautiful thing.

–  Who supported or inspired you along the way?

Shoutout to my once mentors and now close friends Farran Afflick and Sarah Toone, they taught me everything I know about coaching bmx and cycling. Joslyn Thompson for being an inspiration to all women and girls in the fitness industry, I am forever grateful for the support she offered me and all the knowledge I gained from one of the best trainers out there. And last, but not least, my former colleague and now close friend Jenni Gwaizdowski, she’s honestly a force in the cycling industry, I have had admired her for so long for all the work she did at LBK [London Bike Kitchen] and I am so grateful for how open and kind she has always been when sharing information with me and others.

–  Has there been a moment where you realised your presence made a difference?

Yes! Every time I see a little girl or woman trying bmx for the first time because she saw me at the track either coaching or riding and made it seem like something they could also do and be welcomed at!!!

–  What keeps you motivated?

The fact that I’m doing what I love. There’s never a dull moment for me when I’m coaching or teaching. The best part of what I do is always the joy we share as a community when we achieve or learn something new that previously may have been perceived as impossible. Sport is such a power tool for wellness, empowerment and sustainability.

Thanks so much, Silvi, for sharing this with us, and for all the work you do across Dr Bike, as a Mechanics & Maintenance Course tutor and as a BMX coach.

You bring skill, consistency and visible leadership into areas of cycling where women are still underrepresented and we’re so glad we could shine a light on that for International Women’s Day 2026.

You are choosing an experience gift that encourages repair, extends the life of cycles and reflects a more sustainable way of living.

For anyone searching for sustainable Christmas gifts or ethical Christmas gifts, this ticks all the boxes.

Real Impact Behind Every Voucher

When someone buys a Bikeworks voucher, the impact goes far beyond the person receiving it. Every voucher strengthens the work we deliver as a London-based social enterprise using cycles as a tool for good.

This includes the people and stories that sit at the heart of our mission.

The family living with dementia who find joy and connection at our All Ability Club.
The autistic young person riding alongside a parent for the first time in a space that feels safe.
The person rebuilding strength after cancer treatment using our specialist cycles.
The stroke survivor who discovers cycling is possible again with the right support and equipment.

Your voucher purchase contributes to these experiences.
It expands access to cycling for people of all ages and abilities.

Give a gift that opens up access to cycling.

You give someone lifelong skills.
You support their confidence.
You back a mission that keeps inclusive cycling moving.

Learn Bike Repairs in London: Keep Your Bike Road-Ready This Autumn

Dan’s top tips & Bikeworks bike maintenance courses

Autumn in London brings wetter roads, darker evenings, and more wear on your bike. If you want to keep cycling confidently through the season, it’s vital to know how to check and maintain your bike at home.

Our Lead Mechanic, Dan, has created a short video to help you get started. He walks you through the M-Check — a simple step-by-step way to familiarise yourself with your bike and make sure it’s safe to ride.

Watch Dan’s video here.

“Before riding, it is very important to check your bike. We call this check an M check – and it is the safest, easiest way to make sure your bike is ready for the journey ahead.” – Dan, Lead Mechanic at Bikeworks

What is an M-Check?

The M-Check gets its name from the way you move across your bike in the shape of the letter “M.” It covers every key area:

  • Brakes — make sure they’re working properly and not worn down
  • Wheels & Tyres — check they’re secure and pumped to the right pressure
  • Chain & Gears — ensure they’re clean, lubricated, and running smoothly
  • Saddle & Handlebars — check they’re tight and comfortable
  • Lights & Reflectors — essential for cycling safely in darker months

Doing this regularly can prevent breakdowns, costly repairs, and accidents.

Save money by investing in yourself

Why spend £25 every time you get a puncture, or £50+ when your brakes need attention, when you could learn to do it yourself? For regular London riders, those little jobs can add up to hundreds of pounds a year.

With a Bikeworks course you’ll gain the skills to keep your bike running smoothly, avoid big repair bills, and ride with the confidence that you’re in control. The best part? You’ll often save the cost of the course within just a few months.

Learn bike repair with Bikeworks

If Dan’s video inspires you to go further, why not join a Bikeworks bike maintenance course in London? We offer something for every level:

  • One-Day Bike Maintenance Course
Learn the essentials — fix punctures, adjust brakes, and keep your bike running smoothly. Perfect for commuters and everyday riders.
  • Three-Day Bike Repair Course
Go deeper into bike maintenance and gain the confidence to tackle more advanced repairs.
  • Ten-Day City & Guilds Bike Mechanic Training
An accredited qualification for anyone wanting to train to professional standard and open up opportunities to work or volunteer as a bike mechanic.

All our London bike maintenance courses are hands-on, practical, and taught by experienced mechanics in small groups.

New: Bikeworks Vouchers

We’ve just launched Bikeworks Vouchers — the perfect gift for any cyclist. They can be redeemed against all our courses, from beginner sessions to our accredited City & Guilds bike mechanic training. Whether for a friend, a loved one, or yourself, it’s a great way to invest in bike skills that last a lifetime.

Keep cycling through the seasons

Autumn doesn’t have to mean the end of your cycling. With a quick M-Check and the skills to fix and maintain your bike, you can ride safely all year round.

Why buy social with Bikeworks?

When you book a Bikeworks bike maintenance course, you’re not just learning new skills — you’re supporting a social enterprise.

As a not-for-profit, we reinvest funds back into our mission because we believe everyone should have access to cycling. This includes our free-to-access All Ability Clubs, which engaged over 3,400 people last year — disabled people, older people, and carers discovering the joy of cycling together.

So when you buy social, you’re supporting and being a champion for inclusive cycling — making it possible for more people to experience the freedom, fun, and community that cycling brings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a bike repair cost in London?
Even the simplest repair can sting your wallet. A puncture fix in a London bike shop often costs £20–£30, and brake or gear adjustments can quickly add another £30–£50. Ride regularly and those “little jobs” can add up to hundreds over a year. By learning the basics on a Bikeworks course, you’ll save money, keep your bike running smoothly, and gain the confidence to tackle repairs yourself.

What is the best bike maintenance course in London?
Bikeworks offers courses for every level — from a one-day essentials workshop to a three-day intermediate course, right up to our ten-day City & Guilds accredited bike mechanic training if you’re ready to go professional.

Our sessions are practical, fun, and run in small groups with friendly, knowledgeable tutors who love passing on their skills. You can train at our hubs in East or West London — including the iconic Lee Valley Velodrome. And because we’re a social enterprise, you’ll leave not just with new skills, but also knowing you’ve been a champion for inclusive cycling.

Can I buy a voucher for a bike maintenance course?
Yes — our Bikeworks Vouchers make a brilliant gift. They can be used on any of our courses, whether that’s a one-day beginner session or a full City & Guilds qualification. Perfect for friends, family, or even yourself, they’re a gift that lasts far beyond the ride. And with every voucher, you’re also backing our mission to make cycling accessible to everyone.
