The Cycling for Wellbeing program

Our Cycling for Wellbeing programme is an inclusive cycling support group for people experiencing a wide range of health issues, including anxiety, depression, or people who are socially isolated.

You will meet new people, enjoy the natural environment and focus on being in the present moment (taking your mind off things), learn new skills and feel the benefits of regular physical activity. You will be introduced to opportunities for giving to others through longer rides to nearby community organisations and outdoor places of interest.

“I had the most amazing time meeting new
people with similar needs”

This program is inspired by the NHS 5 Steps to Mental Wellbeing– you will build your cycling skills and confidence following the National Standard for Cycle Training syllabus. You will also be able to increase your fitness by taking part in moderately strenuous activity in line with NHS recommendations on healthy levels of exercise.

A program consists of 8 sessions over a month, two times per week and together we’ll work towards completing longer rides of your choice – you should plan to come along to all the sessions to get the most out of it.

It’s not all hard work though- there is plenty of time for enjoying the green spaces and waterways of the Lea Valley, Hackney Marshes or other parks and the canals and nearby green routes, all of which have resting places where we can introduce you to simple mindfulness and relaxation techniques.

We also link you to volunteering and other interesting opportunities: see our Friends and Great Places page for our partner organisations.

From day one I realised the positive difference it made to get out of the house and ride around with other people
