LEARN HOW TO FIX YOUR BIKE LIKE A PRO

Bikeworks exists to empower people to start fixing, maintaining and riding their bicycles with confidence. Whether a complete beginner or an experienced cyclist, we have a course to suit your needs!

We offer one day beginner and intermediate bicycle maintenance training courses at our two training centres in East and West London, as well as a number of advanced courses in our East London Centre. 

Most of our courses at our EAST training centre in the Lee Valley Velopark (Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park). To book onto these courses please select the “Bikeworks Lee Valley Velopark (East London) Services” link below.

Beginner Maintenance Course

All maintenance courses are delivered by fully qualified instructors. Trainees will use professional tools and workstations.

We encourage participants to bring their own bicycles to work on as this will give you the most out of the session (you can tune-up your ride while learning effective maintenance techniques!). For those still keen to learn however, we do have spare bikes to practise on.

Please note, we may have to cancel sessions with fewer than 3 participants, and move participants’ bookings to a suitable future date.

 

BEGINNERS BICYCLE MAINTENANCE COURSE

Duration: 6 hours

Price: £70

The Beginner course covers the basics of bike maintenance, from fixing a puncture, to replacing your brake blocks. It is suitable for a complete beginner to bike maintenance, as well as anyone wishing to brush up on their skills.

The course covers the following:

  • Roadside puncture repair – removal of wheel and tyre
  • M-Check (learning how to check that major components are safe and roadworthy, making minor adjustments)
  • Removal and refitting of brake blocks, balancing brake calipers
  • Adjusting brake cable tension
  • Preventative care e.g. how to clean and lubricate your bike parts

 

 

INTERMEDIATE BICYCLE MAINTENANCE COURSE

Duration: 6 hours

Price: £70

The Intermediate course is designed for people looking to take their maintenance skills to the next level. It covers changing cables and truing your wheel as well as other hits, tips and tricks.

  • A more in depth look at brakes (cables, maintenance)
  • Setting up gears
    • Derailleur limit screws demonstration
    • Principles of adjusting derailleur (front and rear) also known as indexing
  • Basic wheel truing

 

 

Advanced Maintenance courses

Duration: 3 hours (each)

Price: £40 (each)

The advanced package is formed of a selection of 3 hour courses to pick and choose from according to what specific skills you are looking to learn.

Bearing components

This class looks at bearings in detail and will shed some light on parts within the parts (headset, bottom bracket, hubs)

The course covers the following:

  • Introduction to bearing systems
  • Servicing front hub bearings
  • Removal and installation of a threaded headset
  • Overview of different types of bottom brackets
  • Removal of square taper bottom brackets
  • Introduction to sealed bearings
  • Introduction to press fit systems

 

Gear Indexing

This course will enable you to get your gears in good working order with the right alignment. This means no excessive chain wear and getting rid of any clicking for a smooth ride!

The course covers the following:

  • Introduction to gears and how to operate them sustainably
  • Rear derailleur indexing
  • Front derailleur indexing

 

Disc brakes / Hydraulics

Having reactive brakes is super important! In this course you will learn what needs to be done for the sharpest braking in terms of Hydraulics.

The course covers the following:

  • Introduction to hydraulic fluids and appropriate use
  • Demonstration of a standard bleed
  • Rotor truing
  • Rotor adaptors (matching the caliper to the rotor)
  • Shortening your hose

 

Drivetrain course

Your drivetrain is what powers your wheels so having a well maintained set can make your pedalling more efficient! This covers cleaning all the way to what to do when disaster strikes.

  • Measuring chain wear
  • How to wash your drivetrain
  • Lubricating your chain  
  • Replacing your chain and cassette/freewheel
  • What to do when your chain snaps

 

All brakes Special

Some would argue it’s all about the breaking! In this course you’ll be prepared to fix any type of brake (except Hydraulic brakes) as they come in all shapes and sizes.

  • How to change brake pads
  • How to replace brake cables
  • Top tips to maintain your brakes over time

  • Rotor adaptors (matching the caliper to the rotor)

 

Tubeless tyres

Uncover the mystery of the tubeless tyre and learn why this is increasingly becoming a prefered option. This course will be a good introduction to the practice and will cover the theory before going into more detail.

Other Courses

Wheel Building

Duration: 6.5 hours

Price: £80

Demystifying one of the dark-arts of cycle maintenance, our 6-hour course will take you through the process and principles of creating a rear wheel from parts. We have hubs, spokes, rims, and nipples and a fully-equipped professional workshop for your session.

The course covers the following:

  • Calculating spoke length
  • Lacing the spokes, rim and hub to form a wheel
  • Tensioning, dishing and truing of the assembled wheel

 

Commuters Course

Duration: 3 hours

Price: £40

This course is aimed at the commuter who wants to know the essentials of self maintenance without going in too much technical detail. This will enable you to deal with the most common issues and be able to identify more serious ones.

BMX maintenance course

Duration: 3 hours

Price: £40

This course is for all you BMXers out there! In a discipline which puts so much stress on your equipment, it is important to regularly check your components for safety and make minor adjustments where necessary.

  • Introduction to components
  • Assessing the condition of your BMX (M check)
  • Regular wear and tear to look out for (stem/headset bolts)
  • Changing break pads and brake cable adjustment (U brakes)
  • Changing chain and checking chain tension
  • Cleaning tips for a smoother ride
  • Safety requirements of a track BMX
  • Wheel truing

Hub gears maintenance course

Duration: 3 hours

Price: £40

Hub gears are (for some) a prefered option, in this course we will cover the advantages of having hub gear systems and the theory behind it.
